§ 1.0 Research Program, Methodology & Open-Source Hardening Mandate

[UPSTREAM REMEDIATION ENGINEERING]

1.1 Problem Statement. Modern cloud-native and AI-native production environments depend on a deeply nested supply chain of open-source software (OSS) packages, OCI container runtimes, and distributed Kubernetes control-plane primitives. While memory-safe languages and baseline static analyzers mitigate shallow defects, high-impact vulnerabilities increasingly arise across complex state boundaries—such as file-descriptor lifetimes during container namespace initialization, Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) filesystem races, and deeply transitive parser or deserialization flaws across Go, Rust, and C/C++ libraries.

1.2 Upstream Remediation Engineering. Open-source maintainers face an acute operational asymmetry: automated vulnerability scanners flood issue trackers with unverified, low-signal alerts while subtle, reachable bug variants remain unpatched due to maintainer bandwidth constraints. My independent research program focuses on closing this gap through Upstream Remediation Engineering—combining static inter-procedural reachability proofs with deterministic sanitizer/fuzzing harnesses to deliver minimal, verified unified patches (git diff -u) and regression test suites directly to maintainers.

1.3 Post-Mortem Variant Analysis & Supply-Chain Governance. Whenever a critical vulnerability is disclosed in core cloud-native infrastructure (such as runc, containerd, or core Go/Rust codecs), the initial upstream fix frequently addresses the immediate code path while structurally similar invariants remain fragile in sibling modules or downstream forks. By writing formal post-mortem root-cause analyses, AST queries, and deterministic regression harnesses, this monograph aims to help maintainers systematically eradicate entire bug classes under a strict 90-day Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure (CVD) policy aligned with ISO/IEC 29147.

§ 2.0 Automated Variant Analysis & Air-Gapped Triage Architecture

[CONTAINMENT & REPRODUCIBILITY SPEC]
WORKSTREAM § 2.1 (A) OSS SUPPLY CHAIN

Supply-Chain Reachability Proofs & Automated Patch Verification

Evaluating transitive vulnerabilities across cloud-native dependency trees without generating false-positive noise for upstream maintainers.

  • [A.1] Static Call-Graph Slicing: Extracting SSA/AST call graphs (golang.org/x/tools/go/callgraph/vta, CodeQL) to prove whether vulnerable transitive symbols are reachable from untrusted ingress points.
  • [A.2] Isomorphic Variant Sweeps: Modeling state-machine invariants from historical CVEs to audit sibling packages and unmaintained transitive dependencies for identical anti-patterns.
  • [A.3] ABI-Preserving Hardening Patches: Synthesizing minimal bounds-checking and lifetime-hardening patches verified against upstream test suites.

WORKSTREAM § 2.2 (B) CONTAINER ISOLATION

Container Runtime & Kernel Isolation Boundary Auditing

Auditing the boundary between unprivileged container workloads, OCI runtime initialization processes, and the host Linux kernel.

  • [B.1] Descriptor & Mount Namespace Hygiene: Auditing file-descriptor leakage (O_CLOEXEC invariants, fstatfs rootfs checks) and symlink race windows during pivot_root(2).
  • [B.2] Path Resolution Hardening (openat2): Replacing legacy userspace path sanitization with kernel-enforced RESOLVE_IN_ROOT | RESOLVE_NO_SYMLINKS | RESOLVE_NO_MAGICLINKS primitives.
  • [B.3] Control-Plane Admission & Auth Invariants: Auditing parser differentials and confused-deputy privilege escalation paths across Kubernetes webhooks (sigs.k8s.io/json).

PHASE 01 // DAY 0 T + 00h

Private Maintainer Report

Initial vulnerability report transmitted exclusively via private GitHub Security Advisories (GHSA), vendor PGP security@ contacts, or CNCF/Linux kernel security lists (linux-distros).

PHASE 02 // DAY 1–7 T + 168h

Minimal Reproducer & Trace

Delivery of a deterministic, non-weaponized unit/sanitizer reproduction test case and inter-procedural call-graph trace to eliminate triage overhead for maintainers.

1. Strictly Defensive & Authorized Scope: All auditing and variant analysis is performed exclusively against open-source repositories locally on air-gapped hardware or systems explicitly covered by vendor safe-harbor policies. No live third-party production infrastructure is ever probed.

2. Zero Offensive Monetization: Findings are reported exclusively to the upstream open-source project, vendor security team, or CERT/CC for remediation. I do not participate in exploit brokerage or non-vendor vulnerability markets.

3. Patch-First Maintainer Support: Recognizing that open-source maintainers are frequently under-resourced volunteers, every vulnerability report is accompanied by a proposed unified patch and unit regression test ready for private GHSA merge.

4. Encrypted Advisory Coordination: Maintainers and security teams can initiate encrypted coordination using my Ed25519 PGP key published in and indexed via keys.openpgp.org.
